Even before I went to the Graphic Lyceum in Rotterdam, I was in an art class at my middle school
named Picasso
Lyceum. In these art classes I would mostly make my projects with paint. If you’d like to see these you can
scroll down to my Timeline and then search in between the years 2014 - 2018.
At home I used to… well, still am, watching Youtube videos. These videos contained MARVEL clips. These weren't
consperacy theory clips but edits. Edits are basically music videos with, in this case, MARVEL movie clips.
Since I was becoming a fan of the movies. I thought this was very interesting for me and I wanted to make my own
videos just like those Youtubers.
So I tried it out, and I’ve made a few videos. Some of these are now once again deleted from my
own Youtube Channel but I’ve made a few other channels, including one that I can’t get back on which I’ve linked
down below.
The urge from those Marvel edits was what made me think about animations and movies. This was still in the
back of my
mind and not my main focus at the time but I did like editing videos. This would later come in handy when I
needed to
decide which direction inside of Visual Design I wanted to take on at the GLR.
I graduated from middle school in 2018, and started my journey at the GLR in 2018 as well. These were exciting
years for
me. Instead of my art class giving me 6 weeks to make a painting I’d have to step up the pace. In the beginning
they of
course help you a bit because everyone comes from different schools and had a different pace there. After we
got used
to the pace we were introduced to a new class. Kind of an ironic one, which was called Discovery (land). Now in
these
classes we’d get introduced by the many directions the school could provide in the department Visual Design.
Like I’ve said in “The early days” I began having a vibe with editing movies and such. So after we’d discover
all the
different directions it was very clear to me which path I wanted to go. Animation.
And so for the second year I’ve been animating in a lot of different ways possible, trailers, explain
animations,
infographics, infinite loops, walk cycles, etc. This lead to the final few weeks before we had to get an
internship to
try and make short animations using Adobe After Effects. After the 6 weeks of small animations I had to do an
official
test at school. This test was was called Adobe Certified Associate (ACA). And I did obtain this Certificate
called Adobe
Certified Associate - Visual Effects & Motion Graphics using Adobe After Effects® CC 2018.
As I mentioned earlier I had to get an internship for the last year I’d be at the GLR. I didn’t get one in time,
but
with some negotiating I was allowed to do my internship over the entire course of my third school year, instead
of the 3
remaining months. I got a place at Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding (Damen). Since I live in a different
province then
were Damen is located I also got an apartment nearby. At Damen I’ve helped making introduction videos using
Blender. But
since I am the only animator I sometimes didn’t have anything to do, and thus my supervisor would let me have
some
freedom in exploring the many things Blender could do, such as the NPR I did.
FEBRUARY 03, 2019
Visual Design has different directions, one of them being Art & Design. I've made this meeting point using only cartboard.
JUNE 04, 2020
After 6 weeks of doing stuff in Adobe After Effects we were going to get a license for Adobe Certified Associate (ACA).
MARCH 25, 2021
During my internship I've been learning what Blender can do, one of them being Non-Photorealistic Rendering (NPR).
Since 2021 I’ve graduated from GLR. After that I had a gap year, and in that time I started a
job as
a cashier to save money to live on my own. I also looked for a new (HBO) school. I landed on two options.
One
was Hoge Kunstschool Utrecht (HKU) which has a good animation program and I might be able to flow into the
gaming side of it. The other school is called Willem de Kooning Academie (WdkA). I personally didn’t know about
this
school if it weren’t for my niece, who’s a student at that school. And she convinced me to check it out. So
I
applied for both the school open houses. Now unfortunately these were online so I couldn’t really feel the
vibe
in these schools themselves. But the teachers and students tried their best to convince me that it’s fun at
their
school. And WdkA convinced me more. So I applied for the school. As of right now I am still working on the
requirements. But, I have a good feeling about it!
What I’d do after WdkA is still a mystery. What I’d hope is that I would get a job at a gaming industry. But
who
knows, maybe I get an internship somewhere not even close to a gaming company and feel right where I belong.
That’d be something I’d rather want than what everyone keeps telling me I should do, or look like the kind
of
person that does that.
I thought that I'd be a cool idea to make a timeline about my projects from each year. With some you might go towards the page I made for it, others will only have (for now) a small text that tells you a bit about the project. I am either still working on those pages or I don't have anything else to say other than the subtext already said. Then it'd be a waste of time to also create another page where the exact thing is said, but with a bit more layout.
Up here is the idea, I am still working on this.
